Piedmont, located midway between the Italian Alps and the Riviera, is a wine-lover's mecca. It is home to Barolo, "the king of wines and the wine of kings," as well as Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Moscato. The heart of Piedmont is in the rolling Langhe hills, where we'll visit three leading producers: Renato Ratti, whose estate includes a museum of antique wine labels, bottles, and viticultural instruments; Marchesi di Barolo, whose namesake created Barolo wine in the mid 19th century; and the modernist Fratelli Oddero, whose Barolo has been widely admired for the past century. A Day in ChiantiWith its ancient history of wine production and its recent innovations, Chianti Classico is one of Italy's most vital wine regions. Sample a variety of Chianti Classicos and Super Tuscans at three leading wine estates. These might include Cacchiano, located in a medieval castle perched on a hilltop with an impressive view; Dievole, an age-old estate with contemporary flair; and Fattoria dell' Albola, which offers a wide array of Tuscan wines.
